Although Nelson's method is probably more thorough, I have had some luck recently with GrindEQ for converting LaTeX documents to Word. It does a great job with equations and text. Not the best with figures and citations, but I think it does a fairly good job overall. At least better than converting from pdf to doc or docx.

the method I described is much more primitive and rudimentary than this. GrindEQ does genuine conversions (i.e. convert formulas to MS Equation Editor). The only problem is that it is not free, after the trial ends you have to pay for the utility that converts from latex to msword, and separately, for the one that does the opposite.
